Nicole Lozano, Ph.D., LIMHP (she/her) has more than a decade of experience providing mental health services for a variety of presenting concerns. With a keen eye for spotting self-criticism among high-performing individuals, Nicole specializes in working with individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, perfectionism, trauma, and life path confusion. She is particularly skilled with helping people develop a more self-compassionate way through life.

In her clinical work, Nicole integrates a feminist, multiculturally oriented, client-centered framework with cognitive approaches. As a former Daring Way™ facilitator, Nicole’s therapy style has been influenced by the work of Brené Brown and Shame Resilience Theory. She embodies genuineness in her interactions, and fosters therapeutic relationships characterized by warmth, empathy, safety, and trust. Nicole strives to create relationships where clients feel certain of her care for them no matter what, and support for their agency in the change-making process.

Nicole is a Texas native and resident who keeps part of her heart in Nebraska. She earned her Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln’s Counseling Psychology program (APA-Accredited), and is now an Associate Professor at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, where she teaches, trains, and mentors the next generation of counselors, as well as directs the Gender Studies program. She is also Jewish, queer, and an organizer in her community.

Nicole is uniquely skilled at creating and maintaining meaningful connections even when separated by distance, making her an ideal therapist for clients requesting Telehealth services. However, because Nicole is not a full-time clinician with Kindred, she maintains a very small caseload. She primarily supervises clinicians at Kindred, both those in-person and those who see client via Telehealth. Currently, she is supervising Sara Searsy, MS PLMHP and Lauren Brooks, MS PLMHP.

I believe that everyone is striving to be their best selves, but sometimes things get in the way of that. It could be how we think about ourselves, the pressures we feel from society, the struggles we had in our childhood — I think of these as the distractions that keep us from being the version of ourselves that we want to be. I view my job as a clinician to help clients figure out and sort through what those distractions are, so they can show up for themselves and for those around them.

“There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t.” – John Green (from Turtles All the Way Down)
