Matthew Steed, BA

Therapist/Counselor

Matthew Steed (He/Him) is pursuing his Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he will complete his practicum, followed by an internship with Kindred Psychology. His academic journey has been influenced by existential therapy, a modality he selected due to its significance in supporting individuals with chronic illness and its capacity to aid individuals in uncovering their distinct sense of purpose in life. Drawing from years of experience in healthcare, Matt has found existential therapy to parallel his philosophy, making it a natural orientation for his counseling approach.

Having grown up gay in the Midwest, Matt possesses an understanding of the intricacies of navigating identity within a challenging societal context. This experience, coupled with his own diagnosis of a chronic illness during his undergraduate years, has cultivated in him a profound sense of empathy and offered perspective.

Matt’s professional interests lie in working with individuals dealing with co-occurring health and mental health concerns, identity issues, and trauma. Currently, Matt works with college students and has extensive experience working with adults with disabilities, further enriching his understanding of diverse populations and their unique needs.

Matt earned his bachelor’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2021. This degree provided him with a diverse academic foundation which has significantly enriched his counseling approach. His current research addresses inequities in insurance practices. Matt’s passion is in tackling systemic issues and advocating for equitable access to care.

Matt will be working under the supervision of Courtney Yoachim, MA LIMHP CPC, and he is excited to contribute to and learn from the vibrant community at Kindred Psychology. He is committed to fostering a supportive, understanding, and empowering environment for all his clients. While his focus has been on working with children and young adults, Matt is equally dedicated to supporting individuals of all age groups.
