Kathryn (Kate) Nowlan, PhD LP (she/hers) is a Licensed Psychologist who is deeply committed to fostering healing and self-empowerment. Her therapeutic approach is warm, relational, and non-judgmental. Kate’s unique ability to foster and maintain connections with her clients, along with over a decade of experience successfully integrating process-oriented and behavioral-focused treatments via online platforms, makes her an ideal therapist for clients open to exclusively Telehealth services.

Kate earned her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology (APA-Accredited) from the University of Miami with a specialization in adult populations. Kate also has extensive experience working with individuals navigating life transitions, grief and loss, minority stress, mood and anxiety disorders, and PTSD/C-PTSD.

In addition to this, Kate is committed to providing affirming care for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Kate provides a safe space for clients to gain understanding and explore sexual orientation and/or gender identity, navigate the coming out process and other life transitions, develop healthy and supportive interpersonal relationships, and ultimately live congruently with their values in a way that honors the whole self.

She also focuses on helping people, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community, improve intimate partnerships and relationships. She has obtained specialized research and clinical training in relationship therapy modalities such as the online OurRelationship program. Kate helps clients with relational distress improve communication, foster intimacy, rebuild trust, and understand and resolve long-standing relationship problems, like the childhood attachment wounds that often underpin current relationship dynamics.

Additionally, Kate has extensive training in providing exposure and mindfulness-based treatments for OCD, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, panic disorder, and PTSD. Kate is uniquely skilled at tailoring interventions for these treatments to be effective when delivered via Telehealth.

Kate’s approach is client-centered and collaborative, guided by evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapies, and situated within interpersonal and process-oriented approaches. Kate’s learned experiences as a queer, neurodivergent woman facilitate therapeutic growth within an approach that is grounded in openness, curiosity, compassion, honesty, non-judgment, and a touch of humor. Kate’s genuine and curious nature creates a therapeutic environment that fosters growth and self-acceptance, promotes healthy emotional processing, facilitates intra- and inter-personal healing, and encourages clients to find and express their truest, most authentic selves.

So, how in the world did a clinical psychology graduate from the University of Miami end up at Kindred Psychology in Lincoln, NE? We’ll let our Founder, Camie Nitzel PhD tell that story!

In February of 2020, Kate was nationally recruiting participants for her innovative dissertation about a culturally-tailored online relationship therapy intervention for same-gender couples. I spotted one of Kate’s recruitment flyers online and contacted her before sharing the flyer. We kept in touch, and discovered many personal, philosophical and professional similarities in the year that followed. When I realized the timing of Kate’s graduation aligned perfectly with an opening for a postdoctoral psychologist at Kindred Psychology, I invited Kate to apply. Our Zoom interviews and her strong letters of recommendation confirmed my initial impression that Kate was a perfect fit! After organizing approximately 12,073 details for a cross country move during a pandemic, I’m thrilled that Kate successfully completed her postdoctoral fellowship with us, and has joined our staff as one of Nebraska’s newest Licensed Psychologists!
